Traveling in the United States can get pretty expensive. The US is a HUGE country with so much to see. But, I am here to offer tips on keeping the prices down!
Traveling within the United States can be cost effective when compared to traveling out of the country… you do not have to pay for passports, domestic flights are typically under $400-$500, and you can road trip in your own car! There are many options for getting around the states. Obviously, flying and driving are very popular amongst travellers and traveling by trains can be expensive. A way to get around VERY CHEAPLY is buying bus tickets! Instead of blowing a bunch of money on gas, think about taking a bus! A bus can get you from Richmond to New York City for around $30, compared to a couple hundred for flying or by train. When going to cities, look for Airbnb’s. These can often be cheaper than hotels, especially in large cities. However, you have to be careful. Airbnb’s can tack on a lot of extra fees that can blow the price out of consideration. Unfortunately, hostels are not a big thing here. When looking at large cities, like New York or Chicago, hostels may be more easily accessible. When searching for hotels, make sure to use websites like hotels.com to find great deals. When you find a good deal, make sure you look at the hotel’s website and see if you can get the same or similar deal. It is better to book straight from the hotel, rather than on a budget site. This is because if anything were to go wrong and you were to need a refund, the hotel cannot refund you if you booked from a budget site.
When looking to vacation in the United States, remember the immense size of the country. Unless you are full of money you are willing to spend, it is hard to be able to afford to travel to all of the top destinations of America. I suggest that you focus on a singular state or a particular region. This will reduce travel costs as you will not have to spend as much money going to the different destinations! So, find an area of the country that you are interested in and invest in that region. Spend your money on the experiences there and not traveling around!
